For Dust La Rock

2015 Feb by Mike Davis

Just caught wind of the terrible news that one of our friends and fellow graphic artists passed away far too soon. Josh "Dust La Rock" Prince has been an inspiration since the early 2000s. His artwork is huge, not necessarily in size, but in breadth. It's clever, funny, dark, and dangerous. I've spent a lot of time trying to emulate his style and creative approach, especially the work he did for Fools Gold Records, the groundbreaking NY-based dance music label he helped co-found.

I don't remember exactly how we came into contact, but I was blown away that not only had heard of me and Burlesque, but was a fan of our work. Being someone that really looked up to Dust a lot as an artist, that meant a lot to me. I only had the chance to meet him once and he couldn't have been much nicer than he was.

Here are some of my favorite works of Josh's.

A poster he designed during his tenure as creative director at Scion A/V which we had the pleasure of screenprinting here in our studio:

More recently, Josh and his fiancée, a textile artist, started The Whirling Log Trading Co, an online store for indigenous art and vintage Americana goods, and a platform to take back the immeasurably polarizing icon known as the swastika. For years, Josh boldly fought the uphill battle to reclaim the swastika, also known as the whirling log, to celebrate its original peaceful meaning before being co-opted and bastardized by the Nazis during WWII.

Rest in peace Dust. You will be missed.

Mike Davis x Chank x Northeast Minneapolis

2014 Aug by Mike Davis

If you've been driving up and down Central Avenue any time in the last few weeks, you've probably noticed the big, bright CULTIVATE NORTHEAST mural, painted by our buddy Chank, commemorating the new community garden of the same name. After painting one wall, Mr. Charles Diesel Andermack asked our own Mike Davis to design a mural for the second wall. Mike chose some of his favorite produce that's growing in the adjacent garden and added a few gardening tools. Boom.

Chank and a crew of volunteers began applying the art to the wall over the August 23rd weekend. There are a few little touchups left, but other than that, this thing is just about ready to go! We're super excited to be able to contribute some artwork to a great neighborhood on one of the best (if not THE absolute best) streets in the Twin Cities.

BRLSQ Spotlight Series: David M. Cook

2014 Aug by Mike Davis

On Tuesday, August 19th, we will be releasing "Given To The Grave," our first published art print with Los Angeles-based artist David M. Cook. We've had our eyes on his artwork for a hot minute and wanted to make sure everyone was familiar with Mr. Bonethrower as we count down the days until we unleash this beast!

Please introduce yourself to our corner of the internet.

David M. Cook is the architect of a mischievous microcosm. Amicable and unassuming, he hardly seems the “type” to consistently and skillfully crank out such a lewd labyrinth of work, but the cheeky hedonism comes all too naturally. Based in Los Angeles by way of Brooklyn, but originally from Louisville, Kentucky, David (who also answers to Bonethrower) uses no shortage of fine lines to design a world that is equal parts modern mysticism and memento mori—at the end of the day, it all sinks in like a psychotropic drug.

I have used this description a million times but I still think it sums me up pretty damn good.

We see the Robot Skull character making appearances in several different forms throughout your portfolio. How did this character come to fruition?

I am still not quite sure where this character came from to be honest. I have always had a love for all things to do with skulls and I think I finally saw that I had come up with a way of doing it that was all my own. A way to be able to endlessly play with it and develop it that I still have not grown tired of.

What were your drawings like as a kid and how do you see them leading up to art you're doing these days?

Man. Well. My drawings as a child were just these elaborate battle scenes with jets and space ships just destroying each other. They were super complex and weird. I am sure if a teacher had ever seen what I was drawing I would have been sent straight to the good old head doctor. I think that idea of battle and conflict still exsists in a lot of what i am doing. There was a series several years ago that was simply called "epic battles". I was either drawing war or palm trees so who the hell knows really.

Cities like Louisville, where you grew up, tend to have some bourgeoning scenes for punk rock, skating, and art. Did you experience this during your time in Kentucky?

I always say that I would not have wanted to grow up anywhere but Louisville. There was so much weird art and music around all the time. I got to see every band that I could imagine wanting to get to see there. We were so close to Chicago and Tennessee that any touring band came right on through. Let's put it this way. I got to see Fugazi's first show outside of DC with like 30 or 40 other people there. There were just so many great weirdos and characters around all the time. If you guys have not seen it I would highly suggest the new Lance Bangs Slint documentary. That is a pretty great look at what that place was like back when I was growing up there.

Any creative projects or media that you haven't tried yet but have been wanting to get into?

There are a million things I want to try and play in. Most I think will cost a lot to do so I either got to find away to finance it or find a good group of nut balls that are just down to see it happen and don't mind working for free. A good buddy of mine Pete Hilton makes these beautiful guitars and basses and we have been talking for a while now about me designing and him building these ridiculous heavy metal guitars and basses that would be made just so beautifully by him. They would all be totally playable and we would hang them on the wall as art then have a full band come in dressed in costumes based on my drawings and play just this shredding heavy metal and doom. Play three songs walk back over hang the instruments and then just walk out. I would just like to see the reactions that these monsters playing these beautiful instruments would be like. It just makes me laugh thinking about it.

Favorite places to eat in Los Angeles?

To be honest, I am still without a car here so my suggestions might not be the best. But Cactus Taco is incredible, this sushi place called Sugar Fish, and a great Thai food place called Song that just opened near my house. I have never had flavors like what i had there. It's all based on Thai street food I believe and is just incredible.

You have an unlimited budget to curate one day of an outdoor music festival and can book 8 bands / musicians / standup comedians / performers, dead or alive. What's the festival called, who is performing, and in what order?

This is my favorite question ever. Here we go in no particular line up order:
Minor Threat
Bill Hicks
Alice Cooper (only playing the first 3 records)
Nick Drake
Mitch Hedberg
David Bowie and The Spiders From Mars
The War on Drugs
Metallica with Cliff Burton

Name of festival: "The Fuck Was He Thinking"

Mike 2600 ""Music Haunted by the Ghosts of Records Past: Vol. I""

2014 Jun by Mike Davis

What if rap records are actually haunted by the ghosts of the old records that they sample? Did you ever stop to think about that shit? Well guess what... I did. And I made a mix about it. '90s hip hop classics broken down with the original funk and jazz records sampled in them. Enjoy and share!

Our 2014 Bonnaroo poster

2014 Jun by Mike Davis

It's here! We're less than one week away from the start of the 13th annual gigantic music and arts festival in Manchester TN known as Bonnaroo. For the 9th year in a row, we've designed and screenprinted a poster which will be available at the festival merch stands and afterwards in our online store. From music to camping to arts, there's a little bit of Bonnaroo fun happening inside each of these letters, all designed by our own Mike Davis. The poster was screenprinted in 4 colors on French paper by Sarah Schatz. Can't make it to Bonnaroo this year? Check for it in our online store beginning Tuesday June 17th.

Bonus: Here's the initial rough sketch we put together to send to the folks behind the festival. Obviously we didn't have the artist lineup yet.

Sign Painters - the movie

2014 Jun by Mike Davis

Burlesque-recommended film! If you are at all interested in the art, craft, or trade of hand-painted signs, then we strongly suggest you head over to signpaintersfilm.com to check out the new film from Faythe Levine and Sam Macon. Based on the book of the same name, the documentary covers the techniques, 100+ year history, and personal stories of the world of sign painting. It's an eye-opening and very properly-made film. Watch the movie, read the book, paint some signs!

We were pretty pleased to see Minneapolis' own Forrest Wozniak and Phil Vandervaart making appearances and showing off some of their Twin Cities signs in the film. Anyone living here will definitely recognize a lot of their work!

Suitable 4 Framin issue 11

2014 May by Mike Davis

Our bud and longtime Burlesque supporter Iqvinder just sent us a copy of his latest Suitable 4 Framin zine. Focusing on graffiti and related visual arts, the latest issue features all artists from Minneapolis. Alongside a generous feature of Mike Davis' design work are interviews with Jennifer Davis, Biafra, plus lots of graffiti pics. With blogs and online newspapers putting magazines out of business left and right, it's exciting to see a physical zine still being put together with the same care and enthusiasm that we all love about zines.

Grab a copy and check out the other issues over at Suitable 4 Framin's Big Cartel site.

Wes Winship and Mike Davis recently wrapped up an all-new screenprinted poster for tUnE-yArDs' Spring / Summer 2014 tour. We took plenty of inspiration from her fantastic new "Water Fountain" music video (see it below) and ran with it into a wild world of weirdness. This was a fun one to say the least.

Grab a copy on the road or in our online store once the tour wraps up.

Here are a few detail shots:

Cinco De Mayhem recap

2014 May by Mike Davis

Wowowowow thank you to EVERYONE who came and partied with us this past Saturday for our second annual Cinco de Mayhem party! Together we smashed over 25 piñatas carefully crafted by Twin Cities artists and raised over $800 for a variety of charities including Second Harvest Heartland, Doctors Without Borders, and The Ann Bancroft Foundation.

A huge amount of gratitude is owed to all who helped make this great event the incredible spectacle it was:

Matt Visionquest and Hal Lovemelt from Playatta. Their creative vision and technical skills are unrivaled. All of the video projections were the work of their wild wizardry.

Max McDougall for setting up and running the crazy light show that accompanied Playatta's videos.

Hamil, John, and the rest of the video crew capturing all of the magic and mayhem. Can't wait to see the full video recap!

Larry Winship, Tom Loftus, Vanessa Plunkett, and Johnny Quinine for assisting with hanging piñatas, blindfolding and spinning contestants, keeping the crowd safe, and general gallery assistance.

Katie Sisneros for running things on the microphone, hyping up the crowd, and being the best damn host we could have hoped for.

All of the incredibly talented artists who put in some serious work to make some gorgeous and creative piñatas which all ended up being completely destroyed: Abbi Allan, Christopher Alday, Liz Apple, Chris Cloud, Dennis Conrad, Emily Eaton, Ephraim Eusebio, Janet Groenert, Hannah Haugberg, Briana Hokanson, Dane Johnson, Sharyn Morrow, Ben Nylen, Patrick Peterson, Johnny Quinine, Garon Rowland, Robin Schwartzman, and Brenda Taylor.

and now... some more photos. Be sure to check out the #cincodemayhem hashtag on Instagram for more pics and videos from the night. Until next year...

Simpsons opening by Michal Socha

2014 Apr by Mike Davis

This just might be the greatest Simpsons couch gag opening of all time. Created by Polish animation artist Mical Socha, the minute-long scene follows the family on a trippy journey through a Hellish version of Homer's body. It calls to mind alot of classic WWII-era cartoons as well as the 1960's graphic design work of Saul Bass, but it still incredibly fresh and new. See for yourself:

Here's one more from Socha, entitled Click:

2014 Mar by Mike Davis

On Saturday March 22, we had a huge turnout for our graffiti art group show Understand What I'm Sprayin? here at CO Exhibitions. A few hundred art lovers showed up and bought over half the pieces from the show. We'd like to give the rest of the world an opportunity to purchase work from this show and help raise money for the legal defense of one of our friends who got caught up in The System™.

Here are all of the remaining available paintings, prints, photos, and other artwork. See something you'd like to purchase? Please email orders@burlesquedesign.com with the name + number of the piece(s) you'd like and your shipping address. First come, first served. Art will be mailed (or available for pickup in Minneapolis) beginning April 14th.

Arcade Fire: Reflektor Tour poster 4!

2014 Mar by Mike Davis

We are very excited to unveil poster #4 in our Arcade Fire "Reflektor" tour print series. Picking up where he left off with the Death mask, Wes Winship designed and hand-crafted a papier-mâché likeness of Joan of Arc (Jeanne d'Arc, ah-ooooh). With the huge help of Sarah Schatz (who burned about all ten of her fingers hot gluing that foil hair) and Xochitl Perez, this head was meticulously sculpted, painted, decorated, and photographed, all here in our studio.

The poster is a 4 color screenprint featuring metallic blue ink. It will make its debut at Arcade Fire's Houston, TX concert on Wednesday April 9th. We will have copies available in our online store soon after.

BONUS... Here is the earliest known portrait of Joan of Arc:

Cinco de Mayhem 2014: coming soon!

2014 Mar by Mike Davis

In May 2013, we invited over two dozen local artists to design and build their very own piñatas to be displayed and destroyed right here in our CO Exhibitions gallery. We saw everything from Viking ships to wild birds to DeLoreans to baby seals to Game of Thrones characters to oversized potatoes. Art lovers bought "Smash Tickets" for the rights to step up and swing at the piñatas and we ended up raising several hundred dollars for local food bank Second Harvest Heartland. It was one of the most fun and creative nights we've ever seen go down at CO ... and we wanna do it all over again!

Cinco de Mayhem 2014 is going down Saturday May 3rd and we want YOU to take part in it! Are you a sculptor, 3D artist, fashion designer, painter, cardboard enthusiast, or any other type of artist with a vision? Get in touch with us and contribute your very own piñata to this grand event!

Here are the rules:

1) Piñatas must be ready to hang. They should be fitted with a hook, loop, or other area where a rope / carabiner can be fastened. Make sure your hanging point is anchored securely to your piñata. We don't want it to go flying across the room with one hit!

2) Do not fill your piñata with anything flammable, liquid, perishable, or potentially hazardous. If the post office won't mail it, we don't want it on our gallery floor! This also includes any unwrapped greasy foods!

3) Be prepared for your piñata to be completely destroyed.

4) Gallery visitors will pay to destroy your piñata. Proceeds will go towards a charity of YOUR choosing.

5) Please drop off your piñata at CO Exhibitions no later than Monday, April 28th.

4) Have fun and be creative!

Sound like your kind of party? Drop us a line and get involved!

Introducing our Arcade Fire ""Reflektor"" tour poster series

2014 Feb by Mike Davis

As they're preparing to hit the road for a string of concerts across North America, Arcade Fire has commissioned us to create a new series of tour posters. We based the artwork not only on the Reflektor album packaging, but also one some of the band's influences as they were working on the new record. Here is the first poster, designed by Wes Winship and screenprinted by Ben LaFond and Sarah Schatz. Find a copy at the first four tour dates and shortly afterwards in our online store.

Stay tuned for an in-depth look at the making of the poster, including the building of the mask by Wes with Sarah Schatz and the hazy, light beam-filled, spaced-out photo shoot.

BRLSQ Spotlight Series: Courtney Reints

2014 Feb by Mike Davis

On Saturday February 15th, we are very proud to present the grand opening of Moving Skin, a series of photographs from Minneapolis artist Courtney Reints. Here's what she has to say about this striking series of taxidermal images.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

A making, a forming, a creation from remnants to mounts, taxidermy is the arrangement of skin. After the kill, hunters want to preserve their relic, taking care in the field to acquire and retain a good trophy hide. Dedicated to the art, a taxidermist utilizes skills crucial to crafts of carpentry, sculpting and painting. The animal’s core is replaced, transferring the peel like skin to a new form of artificial armature. The liberated hide is scrapped, tanned, sewn, mounted and finished with hand painted coats and glass eyes.

Seized during nature’s docile moments, taxidermy can resurrect an animal’s form as a symbol of achievement, the ultimate document of a hunt’s fortune. An authentic record of antler, feather and flesh. These inert fragments reveal the evocatively raw and elegantly beautiful nature of nature. After an animal has passed, its body is returned back into the world.
