John Baizley "Beyond The Permafrost" art print

2012 Dec by Mike Davis

We will be releasing our newest art print from John Baizley, Beyond The Permafrost, on Tuesday December 4th. The print will hit our online store at 2:00pm Central time. Based on his artwork for metal band Skeletonwitch's 2007 album of the same name, Permafrost began as one of John Baizley's elaborate watercolor paintings. We broke Baizley's original watercolor painting down and built it back up as a 13 color screenprint with an additional layer of ultra high-gloss UV spot varnish. Every print has been hand-signed, numbered, and embossed by Mr. John Baizley himself. This project was meticulously produced in our studio by Wes Winship and Ben LaFond.

There are two ways to purchase the new print:

STANDARD EDITION
Signed, numbered, and embossed edition of 181 prints + 5 APs and 5 PPs
23.5 x 31.5"
13 color print + gloss varnish on Crane Lettra 110# 100% cotton Fluorescent white paper
$139 + shipping

DELUXE EDITION
The Deluxe edition includes 1 print from our Standard Edition, as described above, plus several bonus printed items, all signed and numbered in matching sets in an edition of 60:

1) 16 x 20" 1-color print of John's inked outline on French Black Licorice paper, signed, numbered, and embossed
2) 8.5 x 11" giclée print of original sketch, signed and numbered
3) packaged in special portfolio - a 2-color screenprint on French paper which was hand-treated with bleach effects. Each portfolio is unique and no two are the same. Numbered on the back, not signed.
$215 + shipping
(ships in 2 separate packages - portfolios will be shipped flat)

Each print is embossed by the hands of Mr. John Baizley.

Here's a closer look at the bonus items included in the Deluxe Edition:

One of a kind portfolio containing two bonus prints. Each portfolio is a two color screenprint on French paper which has been treated with bleach and ink. No two are exactly alike.

A few of the different colors we used for the portfolios. They will be selected and shipped randomly.

The two prints inside the portfolio, packed with tissue paper.

A closer look at the one color white-on-black screenprint and the giclée print of John's original sketch.

The back of the portfolio.

If you are looking for a low-cost yet elegant framing option, these prints will fit perfectly into IKEA's large Ribba frame.

John Baizley x Burlesque "The Architect Hand-Painted Series"

2012 Nov by Mike Davis

We've begun revealing and releasing the first few pieces that John Baizley has been working on with us while here at our studio. Beginning with his original line art (created for Cursed's 2008 album Architects of Troubled) entitled "The Architect," we created a short run of one-color screenprints. From there, John has been painting on them using watercolors and we've been releasing these one-of-a-kind pieces for sale through our Twitter feed. So far, two paintings have been completed and many more are on the way! Stay tuned to Twitter to watch the action unfold and keep reading here to catch a peek at the work thus far.

A very special visitor

2012 Nov by Mike Davis

To help get us even more excited about next Tuesday's release of our Beyond The Permafrost art print, we invited our friend John Baizley to come hang out at our studio in Minneapolis for a few days. He's been signing all of the Permafrost prints and will be working on a few brand new projects with us this week.

We are preparing to produce a very very very limited edition of one color prints which John will be hand-embellishing with watercolors. These will be made available on the fly as they are completed. All of the onsale details will be announced via Twitter, so make sure you're following us to keep up with all the action.

There'll be plenty of other surprises going on as we lead up to the release of Beyond The Permafrost, so stay tuned and spread the word to your Baizley-loving friends!

Minneapolis-based rapper and friend of Burlesque Stef Alexander, known better as P.O.S, needs a kidney transplant. Designer Emmanuel Mauléon of Minnesota Vice put together this 4 color poster which we're screenprinting to help raise funds for Stef's medical bills.

The poster will be at First Avenue this Friday for P.O.S' album release show. Can't make it? Check for the prints next week on the Doomtree webstore. They are 19 x 25", cost $25, and 100% of the proceeds go to help cover medical costs!

Also, P.O.S' outstanding brand new album, We Don't Even Live Here, just dropped OCT 22, so go cop that!

1990s Nashville graffiti

2012 Oct by Mike Davis

I grew up in Nashville, TN. As a high schooler, my younger brother and I became fascinated with the graffiti popping up in and near downtown Music City and would drive around after school and on weekends trying to hunt down new work from our favorite writers. Some of Nashville's best would go on to become household names in the graffiti world, so it's always fun to look back at their early pieces that inspired me.

I always loved how simple these letters were, but were so insanely stylish and worked so well together.

"Chromatics" by Tackz (AM7). Painted on the side of his dad's photo / digital output studio, a lot of Nashville's graffiti writers will tell you this is one of the first pieces that made them want to paint.

Rooftop by Beno and Revok. Beno passed away in the late '90s.

Crazy flare tag by Beno.

TDK by Rex2.

Sever and Revok side-by-side pieces painted in about 1997.

Vote NO!

2012 Oct by Mike Davis

We don't talk about politics here at Burlesque all that often. That's not why you come here. But we all know there's a lot at stake in this upcoming presidential election and that's important to us. Those of us living in Minnesota more than likely know about two constitutional amendments which will also be showing up on our November ballots, and those amendments are important to us as well:

1: An amendment to recognize marriage as a union solely between a man and a woman.

2: An amendment requiring citizens to obtain a new voter ID card in order to vote in elections

We here at Burlesque plan to vote NO on both of these and urge you to do the same. We believe that it's nobody's business if two people in love want to be married and share the same rights as anybody else who gets married. We also believe it doesn't make sense to spend hundreds of thousands of taxpayer dollars to make it exceptionally difficult for so many people to vote.

The fine folks at Triple Rock Social Club, Modern Radio Records, and Cakein15 have teamed up to put on a two night musical extravaganza at Triple Rock to help spread the word about voting no on these two terrible amendments. It's not every day that you can find Dillinger Four, Har Mar Superstar, Minnesota Vikings punter Chris Kluwe, and Soul Asylum's Dave Pirner all sharing a stage in the same weekend, especially all for a worthy cause!

We've designed and screenprinted a poster for the event which doubles as a sign to be cut out and placed in your window to help you show your support. Want a copy? Come by CO Exhibitions any time between now and November 6th and grab one. We simply ask you make a $10 - $20 donation to MN United or Take Action Minnesota.

---------------

Here's what Wes Winship had to say about working on this poster: "Last night, while printing these Vote No posters, I was struck by a thought. Printing and distributing these posters might be the most profoundly American activity I could be doing right now.

Being in America, I've had the opportunity to take a passion of mine and turn it into a small business. Taking the skills and tools I've picked up while running a small business, I was exercising my First Amendment rights to make a message I feel strongly about and take it directly to our own presses. My dad gave me a hand and the whole project felt great. This morning, I hung one in my own porch window on the way out the door."

This past weekend, I drove up to Blaine MN to check out Pinnesota, the National Pinball Championships. Holy crap, held right here in Minnesota? OK!

It all went down at Blainbrook Entertainment Center, a bowling alley and arcade about 30 minutes North of downtown Minneapolis. Get a load of that logo. They don't make em like that anymore.

Check out this HUGE Hercules machine.

A Seattle photo essay

2012 Sep by Mike Davis

Oh hey, we're back from Seattle. Here are a few photos from our time out there. Just a few.

Wesley handlin' biz at our Flatstock booth at Bumbershoot. Check the new dangling Dre sticker signage!

Duh of course we went to Pike Market.

Getting ready to conquer some nature. Out at Rattlesnake Lake in North Bend, just an hour East of Seattle.

One hell of a view from the top of Rattlesnake Ledge.

Awesome old timey burger and shake spot in North Bend was the perfect post-hike reward.

R.I.P.

Maaaaaan if you don't know, you better find out pronto.

Concert poster for Phish, August 25th, Atlanta GA

2012 Aug by Mike Davis

We were recently asked by the folks from Phish to design and screenprint a poster for the band's August 25th performance at Aaron's Amphitheatre in Atlanta GA. Mike Davis put together this surreal landscape in a faraway land filled with ropes, tunnels, steps, bridges, holes, and ladders all leading up to a giant maze.

This is a 19 x 25" four color screenprint on acid-free, archival Cougar brand Natural paper. It's a signed and numbered edition of 800 prints and we will have our own small stack of them available for sale today, August 28th at 2:00pm Central time for $50 + shipping.

Here are a few behind-the-scenes images from the design process of this poster...

Badges from the Firefighters Museum

2012 Aug by Mike Davis

My friends invited my wife and I to their son's birthday party at the Firefighters Hall & Museum in Northeast Minneapolis this past weekend. I didn't really know what to expect, but was really impressed with the huge collection of antique engines, equipment, photographs, and especially patches from fire departments all across the globe. Here are some photos of my favorites, but make sure to stop by the museum to see them for yourself!

iPhone Photo Wrapup

2012 Aug by Mike Davis

Here are a few random recent photos from the phone...

My favorite hand-painted sign in the Twin Cities.

Very cool vintage liquor tax stamp from one of my grandfathers' old whiskey bottles.

Cleaning up the office = great way to find a bunch of old George Thompson drawings.

Big ass doughnut!

Tons of steaks on the grill. The two on the left are bison steaks. Man... so good.

This was not fun to come home to. Luckily no records were harmed.

Drew this for a customer. Hope they liked it!

He was right on time. Fuck yeah Jimmy!

The Piss lives on

We've known UK rapper Scroobius Pip has been a fan of our Piss shirt for some time now. A friend of ours just put us up on some hot Hollywood gossip that he's been dating popular tattoo artist Kat Von D. Here's a photo which recently showed up on her Instagram of the man sporting the Piss shirt while holding, in his mouth, a photograph of himself sporting the same shirt. Cheers, you crazy lovebirds!

A celebration of the 808!

2012 Aug by Mike Davis

Today is August 8, also known as 8/08, so we figured today would be a pretty good day to celebrate one of the greatest and most influential musical instruments of our generation, the Roland TR-808 drum machine. Released into the world in 1980, the synthesized drum sounds featured a never-before-heard ultra low bass frequency which would go on to rattle speakers and forever change the spectrum of modern music. So turn your speakers UP and enjoy some of our favorite songs featuring the legendary 808!

Yellow Magic Orchestra "1000 Knives"
One of the first, if not the absolute very first, songs / performances to feature the 808.

Egyptian Lover, one of the godfathers of West Coast Electro.

Sir Mix-A-Lot "Posse On Broadway"
The 808 kick drum makes the girlies get dumb.

2 Live Crew "Throw The D"

Sissy Nobby "Runnin Booty"
New Orleans Bounce keepin' the bass alive and percolatin'.

Ludacris "How Low"
Huge.

Major Lazer "Original Don (Flosstradmus remix)"
RUN THE TRAAAAAACK!

You asked for it: Beyond the Permafrost!

2012 Jul by Mike Davis

Last week we asked all of our readers to tell us which painting or album cover from John Baizley they'd like to see us develop into a mult-color screenprinted art print. Well, the people have spoken and the print with the largest number of votes, by a considerable margin, was the artwork for Skeletonwitch's Permafrost album. We will be working with Mr. Baizley over the next several weeks to prepare this beast to go to press and will be keeping you all updated as we move forward with production and release information.

Thanks to everyone for all of your input!

(Baizley) Vote or Die!

2012 Jul by Mike Davis

As you may have noticed, we've been printing quite a lot of prints with the incredibly talented John Baizley. We've been working closely with John to bring his watercolor paintings to the world as multi-color screenprinted art prints. From Black Tusk's "Passage Through Purgatory" to Tiger Tiger "Cut Them Where They Bleed" to the recent Kvelertak print, it's been a thrill to see Baizley's artwork come to life on our presses.

So what's next? Well, that's where you come in. That's right, we want YOU to tell US what to print next!
Is there a John Baizley painting you've seen and would love to own as a limited edition, signed & numbered art print? Tell us which painting or album cover of Baizley's you'd like to see us print next!

There are two ways to vote...

1) Send an email to vote@burlesquedesign.com with either the title of the painting / album or a link to an image online.
2) Send a tweet to @BRLSQ with the hashtag #Baizleyvote with either the title of the painting / album or a link to the image online.

We will be tallying votes through the end of the day Friday July 27th and will announce the next John Baizley fine art print in next week's newsletter!

Pick up your copy Thursday at Red Rocks or in our online store on Tuesday July 31st.

Here are some behind-the-scenes sketches from the creation of this poster:

Ed Piskor's Hip Hop History Comic Strip

2012 Jul by Mike Davis

We just discovered comic artist Ed Piskor's ongoing series of online graphic novel shorts entitled Hip Hop Family Tree, part of his Brain Rot series. These comics, almost too good to be true, cover the early early early days of NY kids creating hip hop out of nothing, putting on block parties, recording the very first rap records, and birthing legends like Grandmaster Flash, Afrika Bambaataa, and Kurtis Blow. If you're a lover of hip hop and / or graphic novels, these are a must!

Sorry, folks!

2012 Jul by Mike Davis

We'd like to take a moment to apologize for all of the inconvenience surrounding today's Kvelertak print onsale. Since launching our new website last November, we've seen a lot of huge improvements in the functionality of our online store. We've put some highly-anticipated and collectible posters up for sale, namely from John Baizley, and have barely had any noticeable problems with our store, let alone our entire website.

Today at 2:00pm, we had so many people lined up to buy the new John Baizley "Kvelertak" print that we couldn't even fit through the door to put the thing on sale! We were expecting a crowd, but had no way to expect anything of this magnitude. The huge number of people simultaneously visiting our website caused the entire thing to shut down. This was a brand new problem for us and we had no way to prepare for it until it actually happened today at 2:00pm. As frustrating as it was for us not being able to properly access our site, we understand it was even more frustrating for everyone else trying to buy the new print.

We immediately contacted our web host, who investigated the problem and helped get our site back up and running to a degree. Once we were able to get the Kvelertak prints up for sale, many of you were having problems completing your orders or even getting onto the site at all.

We'd like to sincerely apologize for all of the frustration. As we said, this is the first time we've ever experienced something of this scale. We are presently investigating some alternatives to making sure our online store will run smoothly in the future so none of us will have to go through this again. Thank you to everyone who has been patient and understanding with us!

BRLSQ for Bonnaroo

2012 Jun by Mike Davis

Attention fans of music festivals, wolves, astronomy, and beyond... we are proud to announce our brand new poster for this year's Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival in Manchester, TN. Now in its 11th year, Bonnaroo has grown to become one of the leading annual music festivals in the country. With all these zombie apocalypse and Venus transit happenings on top of the creepy 2012 end of the world prophecies, we went for a Spirit Quest theme, complete with a lone wolf howling up at the distant moon in the sky blanketed with constellations.

This poster features a custom Art Deco-style typeface created by Mike Davis. This three-color print includes a rich metallic blue ink and was screenprinted by Ben LaFond. If you'll be at the festival, you can pick up a copy of this print at Bonnaroo's merch table (the only place to grab one for now). Otherwise, we will have copies available for purchase on our online store next week.

BONUS! Here are some behind-the-scenes sketches from the making of the poster.

Down in the Tune-Yards

2012 May by Mike Davis

This past Tuesday, Merrill Garbus, better known as tUnE-yArDs, performed for a live recording of the much revered music program Austin City Limits. Our own Wes Winship designed one hell of a poster for this magnificent occassion, capturing all of the wild rhythms and pandemonium we love about tUnE-yArDs' music. We'll be making some copies available for purchase in our online store beginning Tuesday June 5th.

But wait, there's more! Ms. Garbus has taken the show on the road. She is currently on tour throughout US and Canada and will be selling a variation of Wes' poster available for purchase at these shows. We screenprinted them in a ton of different color combinations, so make sure you get down to the shows to see them all.

And yes, we will have copies of the tour poster available later in the Summer, once these dates are wrapped up. And how cool is this video?

BONUS!
Here's a behind-the-scenes peek at one of Wes' watercolor illustrations he painted while putting together this poster. Click image for larger view.

No reasonable request denied!

2012 May by Mike Davis

So we've got this little place on our online store for people to add comments to their orders when they purchase posters and other goods from us. The comments are generally along the lines of "Thanks!" or "Please leave the package by the side door if there is no answer." Well, the other day, we got this email...

Wes and I realized we had no really good reason to say "No," so, with the help of Sara Syverhus, we got down to business and made this dream a reality!

Send us your drawing requests with your orders! We will choose the best request(s) and turn them into drawings for YOU.
