Star Eyes / Jubilee Friday night!

2009 Nov by Mike Davis

Two of our favorite NYC DJs on the move are coming to town this Friday and we're throwing a party for them to drop bass all over your face!

Star Eyes blew the roof off of First Avenue at last year's Do it To it party. A member of the red hot Trouble & Bass crew (along with Drop The Lime, AC Slater, and others), she's been spooking up dancefloors with her own unique brand of Haunted House music. Check out her song and video Disappear.

Jubilee will be making her Minneapolis debut this Friday. One year ago, she started the monthly Flashing Lights party with Friends-Of-Burlesque DJ Ayres and Nick Catchdubs, where they have converted unassuming dim sum restaurants into makeshift raves with guest DJ spots from Klever, A-Trak, Toadally Krossed Out, and Nadastrom. We love she and Udachi (Trouble & Bass)'s brand new song PAYPUR... alot.

Where is the party? Sign up for the BRLSQ newsletter to get all of the details of the secret location and all that. We sent out a mailer on Tuesday but will send out another one or two before the show goes down!

Expect to sweat it out on the dancefloor and hear plenty of heavy bass and big electro beats on what many consider to be the best sound system in town!

- Anon—Really? And, meanwhile, a ltitle commented on story, also from Lindsay Kines last weekend demonstrates that in-house program development (by a school board no less) can be done very effectively, at ltitle cost and with total control so that the entire thing can be sent out to other boards in the public system….The link is….

Hope: The Obama art book is here

2009 Oct by Mike Davis

A new book has been released which chronicles the multitude of Obama posters created by artists ready for something different. We were heavily involved in the creation of a number of posters featured in the book and it's an honor to have been a part of helping our 44th president get elected. You can order the book directly from its publisher, Zenith Press.

Reading Rainbow

2009 Aug by Mike Davis

We are honored to be featured in two brand new books which are available NOW at your favorite local art book seller.

First up is JUXTAPOZ POSTER ART, curated and assembled, of course, by the fine folks over at Juxtapoz Magazine. This book features some of the best poster artists in the world and highlights their best work from the last few years.

We're pleased to have our posters shown alongside our talented friends such as Aesthetic Apparatus, Jesse LeDoux, Jeff Kleinsmith, The Decoder Ring Design Concern, Bird Machine, and many many others.

You can purchase a copy directly from Juxtapoz's online store. Here's a quick look inside:

The second book, THE REST IS UP TO YOU, is one we've been waiting on for quite some time now. About two years ago, our friend Aye Jay(!) came to visit us and help install an art show in our First Amendment Arts gallery. The show featured collaborative watercolor paintings between his son Cohen (who was 6 at the time) and a host of artists including Chris Ware, Mark Ryden, Shepard Fairey, and the list goes on and on.

Aye Jay and Cohen teamed up with Chronicle Books to put all of these great paintings into a gorgeous book. Burlesque's own Aaron Horkey, Todd Bratrud, Mike Davis, and Ben LaFond all had the chance to collaborate with Cohen and Bennie was even asked to write the book's preface where he speaks on his own experiences collaborating with other artists through the craft of screenprinting.

Most of the paintings include commentary from Cohen, which really show his innocence and creative spirit. It makes us truly miss being a child artist, unaffected by trends, critics, and naysayers. Cohen has a bright future ahead of him and we wish him and the whole Morano family (including the new baby girl who'll be showing up any day now) all the best!

You can pick up a copy directly from Chronicle Books' website! Have a look:

New poster / Mike 2600 in NYC

2009 Jun by Mike Davis

New York New York! I'm gonna be up in your giant of a city later this week. Catch me DJing Thursday night at Santo's Party House for the Cubic Zirconia record release party. I designed the group's "Fuck Work" 12-inch single cover and also this here gig poster for the event. Screenprinted posters will be on hand at the show and also available on our online store after the 2nd.

Three color print on French Steel Blue paper... printed by Bennie of course. Get a load of that lineup. Where else in one single night at one single venue can you hear the ghetto tech and booty jams of DJ Assault, the early '80s cosmic boogie jams of Dâm-Funk, the electronic dance rock of Head Automatica, the acid house disco of Cubic Zirconia, and whatever the hell I end up spinning? What should I play?

Office happenings / Exclusive new Horkey print sneak peek!

2009 Jun by Mike Davis

What the heck's going on around our office today? I'm wrapping up the poster and t-shirt design for Rock the Garden, an outdoor concert in the Walker Art Center's sculpture garden featuring The Decemberists, Yeasayer, Calexico, and local do-gooders Solid Gold. Wes is eating Big League Chew. Mike Cina strolled down the hall to say hello. The pizza place down the street doesn't like delivering to our building, so we started tipping the drivers with Dre Day sticker packs to make it more appealing. Whenever Cina calls to order pizza, they ask "Are you with Burlesque?" so he just tells them "Yes." Welcome to the team. Hey, here's the new Gig Posters book!!! Come celebrate the release with us this weekend! WHERE: Magers & Quinn Booksellers (3038 Hennepin Ave S, Uptown Minneapolis) WHEN: Sunday June 14, 6-9pm WHAT: Pick up a copy of the new book as well as posters and other goodies from Burlesque, Amy Jo, Aesthetic Apparatus, and more! WUT? It's free, stoopid! Are you ready to see an EXCLUSIVE sneak peek at a new Aaron Horkey art print? Are ya? Aaron originally created this artwork for an awesome collaborative 7" between Jesu and our dear friends Fog. Part of Hidden Hive's Kissing Kin split vinyl series, the two artists started working on songs, then passed them off for the other to finish. Check out the site for more info on the record and note that Fog's contribution will be released under a different artist name for this project. - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + - + HEY! Hi fi fo fum

2009 Mar by Mike Davis

Just wrapped up a poster design for the 4 year anniversary party for the Hifi Club in Calgary. The club is run by our homies Mike and Pete from Smalltown DJs. I had to go all in with the Canadian references on this one. Got the Calgary Tower, the Calgary cowboy hat (we confirmed with Smalltown Pete this morning that there are LOTS of cowboys in Calgary), the maple leaf, Royal Bank of Canada logo (one of the illest bank logos ever), and the HIFI CLUB letters, set in a typeface designed in 1977 for the Canadian transit system.

Exposing one of the screens...

That orange is actually gonna be fluorescent, so put on your lazer goggles for this one, kids!

If you're cool and were in Minneapolis over the weekend, then you likely made it over to the ALMOST HOMELESS art show at our First Amendment gallery featuring collaborative paintings by local talent Eric Inkala, John Grider, Isaac Arvold, and Keiko Yagishita. The show is still up and there's still plenty of time to come check it out, so swing on through if you can! Here are a few pics of the artwork...

Here's a test print hanging up in our studio. See how many different BRLSQ-printed posters you can identify in here...
